Vibration Electric Motor: what does it depend on?

It may happen that the electric motor exhibits abnormal vibrations.
The vibrations of the electric motor can be more or less intense and depend on multiple causes, for example a damaged component (bearing) or a problem on the machine on which the motor is installed.

Electric Motor: why does it vibrate?

The vibrations of electric motors can depend on mechanical imbalances, for example unbalanced impeller or rotor, or electrical ones, for example oversized capacitor.

Timely diagnosis of the quality of the electric motor helps to identify vibrations, prevent them and eliminate them quickly. The vibration of the motor may depend on the incorrect balancing of the shaft (depending on the application). An engine that works at high revs, above 5000 rpm, requires a more accurate and precise balancing than an engine that works at 900 or 1500 rpm.

Over time, excessive vibrations can cause engine damage and malfunctions. Even an incorrect connection of the motor power supply can generate vibrations, for example if a three-phase motor is missing a phase.

Whatever the cause of the vibration, it is important to intervene before the winding is damaged, otherwise the entire motor will have to be replaced.

Vibration of single-phase electric motors

An engine vibration does not always mean a faulty engine.
Single-phase electric motors can create vibrations that are transmitted to the machine. This happens if they deliver less than nominal power or work without load (no-load). Even during assembly, a technical error, such as an imperfect coupling between motor and gearbox or between motor and final load, can lead to vibration of the electric motor.

Electric motor vibration measurement

Measuring the vibration of an electric motor, what is measured is the acceleration of the vibrations. The devices for measuring the vibrations are the vibrometer, the vibrograph and the vibration analyzer. Measuring vibrations, allows you to analyze, calculate and identify the source of vibration. In this way, the cause of the malfunction and corrective measures can be precisely determined.
