Self-braking motors with rectifier

All series of Carpanelli Electric Motors are also available in the self-braking version.

The brake can be either alternating or direct current. The DC brake can be used as a standard brake or as a holding brake. The braking unit can be associated with single-phase, three-phase and double-polarity Carpanelli electric motors.

In the industrial field, or in automation systems, it is common to find mechanical braking systems coupled on the axis of asynchronous motors. These brakes are generally operated by an electromagnet, with power from the same power line as the motor. As the power supply is cut, the brake closes due to the springs present in the brake unit, creating a constant braking torque.

This type of electromagnetic brake is generally a disc type. Coupled to an asynchronous motor, it creates a single system called self-braking motor, comprising a three-phase or single-phase asynchronous motor.

The electromagnetic brake can have its coil, powered by direct current or alternating current, depending on the type. If the electromagnetic brake coil is powered in direct current, it is used an appropriately sized rectifier bridge.

Rectifier for self-braking motors

The rectifier can generally be housed inside the motor terminal box, or externally to the box, screwed like a cable gland. This type of rectifier has some particularities: it satisfies the task of rectifying alternating direct voltage and incorporates protection devices against overvoltages.
The rectifiers can have 4 or 6 terminals, or PG with wires, through which the connections to the electromagnetic brake coil are made.

The self-braking motors guarantee maximum safety, precision and reliability. They provide control in the blocking phases and are mainly adopted to: reduce processing times by reducing machinery slowdown periods; carry out parking; satisfy the needs related to safety regulations.

The choice of the type of self-braking electric motor must be made taking into account various parameters, necessary for identifying the necessary size of the brake and the motor: desired braking speed, number of starts/hour, flywheel mass applied to the shaft.
